For sanitary applications requiring a cost effective alloy, stainless steel grade 304 is one of the best sought after. Usually cold worked, ASTM A270 TP304 sanitary stainless steel tubing is used primarily as a structural component. Typically, industries like the food and beverage, medical, pharmaceutical, and biological industries use ASTM A270 TP304 sanitary stainless steel tubing. Since these materials are required to be sanitary and non-reactive, the metal is chosen accordingly.
While Grade 316 is a very popular choice, the use of UNS S30400 stainless steel sanitary tubing is noted in some plants for two reasons. First, the cost of using this material is very low. Second, astm a270 tp304 alloy is available globally, so it is easy to source this tubing. In general, the material used to produce these tubes needs to be kept sterile at all times.
